For Teachers and School

Hey, secondary school teachers! We offer a number of workshops and programs for your drama classes. Read on to find out more.
Workshops
Over the past several years our team has worked with schools across the region to facilitate drama workshops for high school students. Our Education Co-ordinator, Leah Holder, has created a number of tailored workshops and programs to suit high school classes in Simcoe County.
Our workshops are fun, engaging, and informative – Leah has decades of experience as an educator and teacher and will help invigorate your drama students with new ideas.
Opportunities
What’s great about our workshops is that we’ve offered high school students the chance to participate at Theatre by the Bay as a result of those programs!
In 2019, we worked with students in the Eastview Secondary School drama program to develop our main stage production of The Cenotaph We also offer regular co-op placements for high school students on a yearly basis for those interested in the behind-the-scenes aspect of theatre.
We’ll help take your students beyond the classroom and into the real world of theatre production!

Employment

Theatre by the Bay is committed to hiring, showcasing, and developing artists within Simcoe County. Hiring preference will be given to those who live in, were raised in, or have family within Barrie and/or Simcoe County.
Theatre by the Bay promotes an environment of equity, inclusion, and diversity. Artists from under-represented communities, especially those who live within Simcoe County, are highly encouraged to apply for employment.

Audition Notice

Theatre by the Bay is holding auditions for five roles in a new play written by Chloé Hung, and directed by Iain Moggach. The play, soon to be announced, will premiere in September 2024. This production is produced under the DOT Agreement. Both Equity and non-Equity actors are welcome to audition.

THE SHOW

Set in a soon-to-be demolished high school in 2016, five friends return for one last celebration only to discover how much has changed between them, stayed the same, and could have been different.

THE PROCESS

Rehearsals will begin in-person the week of August 12th, running Monday to Friday, until August 30th. Please indicate whether, if supported, you could rehearse in Barrie or Toronto exclusively, or would be amenable to either. We would also love to hear if you would be amenable to a part-time rehearsal schedule. Tech will be held at the Five Points Theatre in Barrie from Oct 31st to Sept 3rd.

PERFORMANCES

There will be one (1) preview performance at the Five Points Theatre on September 4th, and twelve (12) regular performances from September 5 to 15th.

COMPENSATION

Equity members will be contracted under the DOT policy.

Volunteering

Our shows would not be possible without our volunteers! We are always looking for people who are eager and ready to jump in and have fun. It takes 50 – 60 volunteers to make our season a success.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, all age groups, and all levels of experience. We have teenagers, retirees, and everyone in between. Best of all, no experience is required to volunteer – just plenty of enthusiasm!
To make your life easier, Theatre by the Bay manages all of its volunteer shifts through Tandempark. This amazing free (and secure) software allows you to see what shifts are coming up, receive notifications before your shift, and much more! All volunteers will be required to create an account before their first shift.

All volunteers are invited to read this.

The Nick Baillie Award for Volunteer of the Year

The Nick Baillie Award for Volunteer of the Year is our way of honouring volunteers who went above and beyond during their respective season. The recipients are publicly announced at our Season Launch event.

Barrie Theatre Lab

Generously supported by: Anna Small and the City of Barrie’s Cultural Grant Program.
Are you a budding playwright living in Simcoe County? The Barrie Theatre Lab is a once-a-month get-together for playwrights seeking to have new scenes and plays read out loud. No piece is too small, rough, or new!
To date, the Barrie Theatre Lab has workshopped more than 100 plays by more than 40 playwrights from as far away as Toronto and Haliburton!
Even if you’re not a playwright, come on out! The Barrie Theatre Lab is open to the local theatre community as a place where we can come together, talk about new work, and network.
Actors are especially welcome as we will need lots of readers! For actors, reading new scenes and plays is an important way to practice your craft. Being able to read a scene you haven’t had much time to rehearse is a very important part of getting work as an actor.
