Theatre by the Bay is proud to present…

Mary of Shanty Bay

By Leah Holder

Directed by RBC Emerging Artist Brandon Nicoletti

Mary of Shanty Bay is a new play based on the real-life diaries of Mary Sophia Gapper. Mary has come to Canada from England in 1828 on a short visit to see her brother in Thornhill. What begins as a short visit becomes a lifelong adventure as Mary and her new husband find themselves building a home at the edge of the world. Life is difficult and survival itself is a struggle.

Does Mary possess the resilience and resourcefulness to rise to the occasion? Join Theatre by the Bay and St. Thomas Anglican Church as we celebrate the lives of Shanty Bay’s legendary founders.

“I now felt for the first time that I was far away from home and all that makes home dear.”
